INTRODUCTION 

Three ways of applying force to enable crackThe historical development of the present knowledge on fatigue crack initiation and Fatigue crack growth is marked by a number of characteristic observation and analytical concepts.  Among them, the application of the stress intensity factor K to fatigue crack growth under cyclic loading and to fracture toughness Kic is well established by now.

There are three ways of applying a force to enable a crack to propagate:

  • Ø Mode – I Fracture Opening mode (atensile stress normal to the plane of the crack).
  • Ø Mode – II Fracture Sliding mode (ashear stress acting parallel to the plane of the crack and perpendicular   

                               to the crack front).

  • Ø Mode – III Fracture Tearing mode (a shear stress acting parallel to the plane of the crack and parallel to

                                the crack front).

A Case Study on the same is presented below which showcased the propagation of crack in a T-Welded joint under cyclic loading.
